Property of the artist

Mutedness is a mountain to overcome, whether it is due to influences from the outside or obstacles set inside oneself. Unwanted silence is suffocating, hindering actions and movement; audibly ungraspable, as from a mountain top one can have the visual overview but not one of the surrounding soundscape. The hard rock formation wraps one of the senses into a soft foam barrier, creating an interstice between the will to speak and the communication that does not happen.

The sculpture is made of foam, resembling the pyramid structures used to block noise in sound studios. Each pyramidal shape is replaced by a reduced copy of the Matterhorn mountain peak: one of the most well-known mountain tops, used in the logos of Toblerone chocolate and Paramount Pictures. The placement of the piece in space obstructs movement, opposing the idea of surround sound (i.e. Dolby Digital Surround in film theatres) with an “in-between” layer to create surrounding silence.

Just as the biennale theme deals with the notion of interstitial space(s), the sculpture Dolby Toblerone works as a layer creating an in-between mute soundscape into any space it is placed in. The shape of the Matterhorn mountain peak, famous for the stories and myths about it as well as its connections to popular culture, steps into conversation with the physical mountain range of Rosengarten in the Dolomites.
